There is a gentleman who whenever he visits our site, he brings a box of cinnamon doughnuts and a box of cheese and bacon buns. It’s very exciting. If I have an important job out here, that job would be the email I send out to different departments letting them know the the doughnut man has arrived and he has bought with him glourious food stuffs. I once sent the email out, and it seemed as if some of the people I sent the email to actually beat the email. It would have not been even 30 seconds since I pressed the send button, and the people on the doughnut mailing list started coming into the processing wing.

Ah, yes. I acutally have a mailing list set up to tell people that there are doughnuts and buns for them to eat. I used to walk around, but after a while it became obvious who would want free food and who didn’t, so I created the mailing list “Doughnut people.” I like to think that these people are sitting at their desks, having a boring day, and then up pops the notification that there are Free!! Dougnuts!! And Scrolls!! And that makes them happy.

One of the great things about the doughnut man, is we’re never really sure as to when he is going to appear. Well, I say we, but I am sure that the supervisors and managers know when he is due. The ‘lay’ people do not, so whenever he turns up everyone gets slightly a little bit excited. And there is great joy throughout the building.

People are always grateful to be told that there is free food, and they like to tell me how much they appreciate me telling them. As I always say back to them, I’m doing myself more of a favour than them; the doughtnuts and whatnot are in my line of vision, so the sooner I can get rid of them, the less likely I am to cave and scoff down the lot of them. So really, anyone who’s not me that eats them, are doing me a huge favour. So really, it’s the Circle of Life… but with more food and less witch-doctor gibbons. It also comes in handy if I need a different department to do something for me, they remember that I am a nice person who lets them know first that there’s delicious and free food on the premises.

I’ve always said that if you want to poison people out here, all you need to do is bring out a box of food, and it will get eaten within minutes. We came in one morning at 7 am and there was a box of doughnuts sitting on a filing cabinet and people devoured the box like a lion on a gazelle during a 15 month drought. The weird thing about these particular doughnuts, is that it was not the usual time for the doughnut man to drop them off, nor was it the usual spot he dropped them off. No one knew who they belonged to, and no one cared. As long as the food was free they were happy to eat. I should also point out that our site is 40 minutes out of town, and while we have vending machines with soft drinks, potato chips and chocolates in them, unless you bring food, there’s no other food readily avaible. Most people keep ‘spare’ food in their desks for those rare but devastating occassions when you forget your lunch on the kitchen table.

I have been very busy today, cooking wise. So far I have

* made a chicken curry,

* made a lamb rogan josh

* stewed some apples

* whipped up a very easy bread-and-butter-pudding,

and

* made mayonnaise from scratch.

All I have to do now to portion up the rogan josh and freeze it and I am sorted for ages when it comes to coming home from work and not feeling up to cooking and having to get the washing up done the same night.

Add to that another trip to supermarket where I only bought items that were on my shopping list and I feel I've earned at least 6 ticks in the "Almost a grownup" column.

I have learnt (learned? I can never work out which one to use. If there's a trick to remembering please let me know) that I need to have Adele on the iPod and a $3 plastic tiara on my head give the motivation to kick booty on weekends and get heaps of house work and kitchen stuff done.

Hmmm, does a $3 plastic tiara negate the 6 ticks I just gave myself on the "almost a grown-up list"? I may need to re-think my weekend strategy in that case.

I can never decide whether I should use my Nan icon or a food icon when talking about my Nanna D's recipes. Considering the Nan in the icon pic is not the grandmother in question, I should most likely use an icon with some sort of food item in it.

Anyway.

Today I felt like having something sweet-ish for afternoon tea. I don't have sweet food laying around my house, as I am one of those people who cannot leave sweet food laying around the house. I am one of those people that if I go grocery shopping in the morning, any (and I hate to say most likely) all sweet foods will be eaten by that afternoon. I am not proud of that, and so I have learned that I just shouldn't buy those foods in the first place. But, due to the position of the moon and its affect on things like tides and women's cycles I was craving something sweet. The supermarket was closed by this stage, so I decided to try out on of my great-grandmother's recipes.

So, I give you Chocolate Cake Number 2
The destructions )

In other non-sweet cooking stuff, I was reading an article about how some workers in ababttoirs were 'mishandling' the deaths of the animals. It has turned my stomach, and I think I am about to go into a "No red meat" phase. Does anyone have any low-fat vegetarian recipes they can recommend? Preferably ones that can be frozen, but I'm easy.

The last time I went home, Mum gave me my Great-Grandmother's recipe books to copy out. My great-nan died in 1991, and I think she was about 80-odd back then. A lot of these recipes are very 'old-school'. Not only are they all the measurements written in the imperical system, but she has used a bigger variety of ingreadients that I would have given her credit. Or, as my mum put it "She was a woman who wasn't afraid of a frozen prawn."

My favourite is when you're looking through it and you see a recipe for "Mock chicken loaf." And do you know what the 'mock chicken' is??? It is rabbit. I can't help but wonder why she didn't just call it Rabbit Loaf.
She also uses Ox/beef tongue more than once, and she isn't afraid to use a sweet and sour sauce on anything.

I keep getting excited when I find something that I remember her cooking for us when we went to visit her. I rang Mum excitedly one night because I had found the Lemon Butter recipe. Now, did I like Lemon Butter? No, I did not. But, I can remember her keeping it in a glass jar, with plain cotton covering the lid of the jar, and it was just like being in her kitchen all over again. I still have not found her recipe for Powder Puffs, which she always made for my brother. It is vital I find this recipe as this was the GREATEST BISCUIT/DESSERT DISH EVER. When Mum told Scott and I that her Aunt had given her the books, we both mentioned the Powder Puffs in an excited breath. We have not had this treat for almost 20 years, and while I small part of me is sure it would never be the same as her, I am desperate to make this. It is so light and fluffy and they look exactly like the powder puffs grown-ups used to use on their faces. Except, Nanna D's powder puffs had jam and cream in them. (Real honest to goodness homemade jam!)

Mum asked me to write down the Rum Ball recipe when I found it, and unfortately for everyone, I am only into the second of 6 recipe books and I have already found 3 differnt rum ball recipes.

The hardest part of this is reading Nanna D's writing. She has very spidery writing, with loops an twirls in the oddest of places. The best part is reading Nanna D's writing. It's like she's right in the room, and she's about to give me a cooking lesson. Part of me just wants to start making cakes, and relishes and whatnot, and another part of me doesn't want to , in case they're not as good as I remember. I may have a try making her marble cake though - if only so I can say that I have made one from scratch and not just bought it at the supermarket.

I also still have her savoury recipe books to go through yet, which I am very excited about. I am trying to impove my diet by eating more fresh fruit and vegies, and I definately think trying things that were popular over 50 years ago will help there. I can see stews and pies in my future (No Ox tongue though. I do have lines I cannot cross.)

I gotta tell you, I think I"m having more fun reading the books than I would trying to recreate them.
