I can never decide whether I should use my Nan icon or a food icon when talking about my Nanna D's recipes. Considering the Nan in the icon pic is not the grandmother in question, I should most likely use an icon with some sort of food item in it.

Anyway.

Today I felt like having something sweet-ish for afternoon tea. I don't have sweet food laying around my house, as I am one of those people who cannot leave sweet food laying around the house. I am one of those people that if I go grocery shopping in the morning, any (and I hate to say most likely) all sweet foods will be eaten by that afternoon. I am not proud of that, and so I have learned that I just shouldn't buy those foods in the first place. But, due to the position of the moon and its affect on things like tides and women's cycles I was craving something sweet. The supermarket was closed by this stage, so I decided to try out on of my great-grandmother's recipes.

So, I give you Chocolate Cake Number 2

1 cup self raising flour
3/4 cup sugar
1 tablespoon cocoa
1 tablespoon melted butter
3/4 cup milk
1 egg unbeaten
vanilla essence

Place ingredients in bowl in above order. Beat for 5 minutes. Bar in a bar tin. Moderate oven for 1/2 hour.

This was a nice cake. And not only was it a nice cake, it was an easy cake, that created very little mess. Actually, this is the first cake I have made from scratch in about 15 years. (The last cake I made from scratch I substituted icing sugar for flour. Don't ask. It was not a nice cake) I was most pleased with myself. It's not too chocolate-y, so next time I may add more cocoa. And while it was a cake, it wasn't too sweet. I dont' think I'm going to ice it, as I think I prefer it in it's not too sweet form.

In other non-sweet cooking stuff, I was reading an article about how some workers in ababttoirs were 'mishandling' the deaths of the animals. It has turned my stomach, and I think I am about to go into a "No red meat" phase. Does anyone have any low-fat vegetarian recipes they can recommend? Preferably ones that can be frozen, but I'm easy.
